Brahma, the creator, had ten sons: Marichi, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Pulah, Ritu, Bhrigu, Vashishtha, Daksha and Narada. Among these, Maharishi Bhrigu had a son named Par Brahma. He was born in the country of Gour. His son was Kripacharya. Kripacharya had Shakti Sharma and Shakti Sharma had Maharishi Gautama. Chakravarti Gurjarkarna, king of Gurjardesh, worshiped Maharishi Gautama. Once while travelling Gurjarkarna entered the region of Janakrai. Lions and deer were roaming there together, creepers were laden with flowers and many trees were laden with fruits. Seeing that region, the king was surprised that this might be the ashram of some sage. On asking the Brahmins, the Brahmins replied that O King, the place where you are standing is the ashram of Shri Gautam Rishi, who is the best among the Brahmarishis and a storehouse of penance. On hearing this, the king left all the material of luxury outside the ashram and reached the ashram to meet the sage. There he saw that Pippalad Muni's 12 sons, Vatsa, Gautam, Shandilya, Garg, Mudgal, Kashyap, Bharadwaj, Vashishth, Oshanas, Atri, Parashar and Kaushik, all the Rishi Kumars were studying Nyaya Shastra and the learned ascetic Shrimad Gautam Rishi was seated there. The king fell at the sage's feet and prostrated himself. The king said, "Maharishi! By seeing you, all my sins have been removed and all my wishes have been fulfilled." Maharishi also enquired about the king's well-being.

Whoever is born in the lineage of which Rishi, he is his Rishi Gotra - There are two main types of gotras – 1. Rishigotra 2. Kulgotra. Another proof of the number of Rishi Gotras: - Satyashadha Hiranyakeshi is given in the Shrautasutra as follows - Viswamitra, Jamadagni, Bharadvaja and Gautama. Atri, Vasishta and Kasyapa are the causes of the gotras. The offspring of those seven-year-olds, the eighth of Augustus, are called gotras. Twenty-four gotras and fifty-nine differences of gotras. There are hundreds and innumerable gotras (Dharmasindhu) In the above description of the number of gotras, at one place it is mentioned that there are 7, then 8, then 24 and 49 different gotras, 100 gotras and infinite number of gotras. But where has the Rishi Gotra been mentioned as far as Gurjar Gaud Brahmin community is concerned. The Gotra of the Rishis who had come with the above mentioned Rishi Gautam was determined before them and the Rishi Gotra became famous by their names. Their names are as follows : Vats Oceanus from Usana, son of Bhrigu Atri Garg Kashyap Parashar Kaushik Mudral Gautam 10 Bhardwaj Vasishta 12. Shandyal. Here in this context, whenever the name of the son and grandson of the sage whose gotra it is is added with determination, then also the Pravara is thought of, so be it!
